Brian Laundrie search team adds a K-9 unit. Here’s why

Brian Laundrie remains missing. Now, K-9 dogs have been brought in to help

A K-9 unit has been helping the massive manhunt for Brian Laundrie, the boyfriend of the late Gabby Petito.

Per Fox 13 Tampa Bay, Pasco County Sheriff’s Office said its K-9 unit has been helping the North Port police, the Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office and the FBI in the search for Laundrie at the Carlton Reserve, a 25,000-acre campground.

• The dog, named Diesel, has been used before to detect human remains.
• He is a 3-year-old Labrador retriever.

The Pasco County Sheriff’s Office, which is located about 1.5 hours away from the Carlton Reserve, told NBC New York that the FBI and the North Port police requested the dog to work on the campground.

• Per WFLA, the dog’s arrival came as a number of law enforcement vehicles arrived at the campground. It’s unclear what all of the activity was about.

The search continues for Laundrie, who has been missing since the middle of September. Laundrie is a person of interest in the Petito case.

Petito and Laundrie went on a cross-country road trip together this summer. But only Laundrie returned to their home in Florida, driving Petito’s van, on Sept. 1. Petito was reported missing on Sept. 11.

• On Sept. 19, authorities found humans remains in Wyoming that matched Petito’s description. Two days later, the remains were confirmed to be Petito, who died by homicide.
• Just this week, Teton County Coroner Dr. Brent Blue said Petito died by strangulation.
• Laundrie’s whereabouts remain unknown.
