THE TRENDS

For BYU: The Cougars have won two straight games — both against Power Five opponents — and will be heavily favored against their FCS opponent. BYU has won its previous six games against Idaho State by an average of 31 points.

For Idaho State: The Bengals are on a three-game losing streak after knocking off FCS top 10 UC Davis for their lone win. Idaho State has played another FBS opponent prior to Saturday, losing to Nevada 49-10 in the season’s second week.

WHAT TO WATCH FOR

It’s expected BYU will be able to utilize more of its bench this week against the lower-division Bengals, a welcome development considering the Cougars will have played the first 10 weeks of the season without a bye.

It will be interesting to see how both the BYU offense and defense perform after last week’s rollercoaster 66-49 win over Virginia. The Cougars had easily their best offensive outing against the Cavaliers, and Idaho State is giving up 448.9 yards and 33.8 points per game. The BYU defense, meanwhile, will be trying to rebound from a tough performance while also looking to get some younger players experience.

KEY PLAYER

Jaren Hall, QB, BYU: Hall is coming off one of his most brilliant performances as a Cougar — he threw for a career-best 349 yards and three touchdowns while also rushing for 42 yards and another score as BYU scored touchdowns on its first four possessions and scored on five straight drives in the second half. His challenge on Saturday will be to get the BYU offense off to a strong start and build a healthy lead in order for the Cougars to feel comfortable in going deeper into their bench as the game wears on.
