Salt Lake County Auditor Scott Tingley has submitted his resignation to take a new job with the state.

Tingley told the Deseret News on Tuesday he sent his letter of resignation to the Salt Lake County Council after he accepted a new position with the Utah Division of Technology Services as director of internal audit.

“Serving the citizens of Salt Lake County as their elected county auditor has just been the highlight of my career,” Tingley said. “All the relationships and people that I’ve worked with at the county have just been amazing over the last seven years.”

Tingey, a Republican, has served as the Salt Lake County auditor since 2015. He was last elected in 2018. His current term ends in January of 2023, so the Salt Lake County Republican Party will nominate a replacement to serve out the remainder of his term.

“I’m going to be sad to leave the county, but I’m also really excited to join the (state’s) technology services team,” Tingley said. “In that role ... I’ll have a chance to interact with state employees throughout Utah, so I’m really excited for my new role.”

Tingley said his resignation is effective Dec. 31 to let the news “sink in” for employees at the county and give the Salt Lake County GOP time to choose his replacement.
