THE TRENDS
For Stanford: After upsetting No. 4 Oregon in overtime at the start of October, Stanford has lost three consecutive Pac-12 games, losing to Arizona State, Washington State and Washington.
For Utah: After a 42-34 loss against Oregon State, Utah’s first Pac-12 loss, the Utes beat UCLA 44-24 last week to take full control of the Pac-12 South.
WHAT TO WATCH FOR
Stanford averages 249 yards passing per game, good for third in the Pac-12, and ranks dead last in the conference in rushing yards per game with just 92. The Cardinal are going to throw, and throw a lot, against Utah.
In previous years, Stanford has been a run-first team, but not this season. The Cardinal’s offensive line is not as dominant as in years past, and the running game has suffered.
Utah’s defensive line has been improving during conference play — the Utes have the most sacks in the Pac-12 — and could cause havoc against the Cardinal offensive line, who are giving up the third-most sacks in the Pac-12.
If starting quarterback Tanner McKee is healthy, the Utes’ secondary will be tested through the air a lot on Friday.
KEY PLAYER
Tanner McKee, QB, Stanford: Starting quarterback Tanner McKee is questionable for Friday’s game with an injury, Stanford head coach David Shaw said in his weekly press conference.
“We’ll see over the next day or so if he is going to be ready to go. If he’s not, Jack West and Isaiah Sanders, honestly both probably have to play. I think we’ve got a plan of things that both those guys can do well and we will prepare that way,” Shaw said.
McKee, a sophomore, leads Stanford’s pass-heavy offense, throwing for 1,916 yards, 14 touchdowns and five interceptions with a 64.8% completion rate. McKee was great through the Oregon game, but has slowed down a little bit, throwing one touchdown and three interceptions against Arizona State and no touchdowns and two interceptions against Washington.
Overall, McKee has been a great pocket passer and ranks fourth in the Pac-12 in passing yard and second in the Pac-12 in passing touchdowns.
QUOTABLE
“He’s a big strong kid. A pocket guy, who can move around, but he’d rather beat you from the pocket. 6-foot-6, 230 or 240, strong arm and he’s a really good player. He was a big-time recruit coming out of high school and he’s their guy at this point.”
— Utah head coach Kyle Whittingham on Stanford quarterback Tanner McKee
“Cam has really, really grown even throughout the season. He’s become a playmaker ... if he needs to scramble and take off and run through contact, get the first down, that’s what he does. If he needs to throw the deep ball, if he needs to throw the intermediate ball, whatever the team has needed him to do, he’s done it.”
— Stanford head coach David Shaw on Utah quarterback Cam Rising
