Running back Tavion Thomas not only played a big role in helping Utah take a dominating 28-0 halftime lead on No. 3 Oregon, but he also broke a school record Saturday night at Rice-Eccles Stadium.

Thomas scored on a 10-yard run, on third-and-9, in the first quarter. Then he added a 4-yard touchdown run late in the second quarter to earn his 16th TD of the season — a new single-season school record.

With that second touchdown of the night, Thomas surpassed John White IV (2011) and Zack Moss (2019) for the most by a Ute rusher in a single season.

Thomas scored four touchdowns against UCLA and Stanford in back-to-back weeks before being sidelined for precautionary reasons last week at Arizona.

The Independence Community College transfer entered the weekend ranked in the top 10 nationally in rushing touchdowns.

It took some time for Thomas to find his groove at Utah, from reporting a little overweight to fall camp to fumbling in each of the Utes’ first two games of the season.

But since October, Thomas has been one of the Pac-12’s top running backs.

“When I first saw him I was like, ‘Wow, this is a big running back right here. It’s nice to have a guy like (former Alabama running back and Pittsburgh Steelers rookie) Najee Harris,’” said quarterback Cam Rising. “I was just excited. I knew he’s a phenomenal player when he first got here and I was excited to see him go.”
