A second omicron case was revealed in a Minnesota patient

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention issued a reaction and some advice as the second official case of the omicron COVID-19 variant was identified.

Dr. Rochelle Walensky, the director of the CDC, said that the CDC has been preparing for the omicron variant to hit the United States. Now, it is working with local health officials to prevent the spread of the virus.

  • CDC has expanded its capacity for genomic sequencing over the past nine months and we have more tools to fight the variant than we had at this time last year from vaccines to boosters to the prevention strategies that we know work, including masking in indoor public settings, washing your hands frequently and physical distancing,” Walensky said. “These methods work to prevent the spread of COVID-19, no matter the genetic sequence.”

Officials announced the second official case of the omicron variant in the United States Thursday. The patient is a man from Minnesota who traveled to New York City for a two-day convention at the Javits Center in Manhattan, according to NBC New York. The patient reportedly had mild symptoms.

On Wednesday, the CDC confirmed the first official case of the omicron coronavirus variant in the United States. The case was found in a California woman who was recovering from mild symptoms.

  • The CDC said Thursday that people should work to prevent COVID-19 through mitigation strategies like the vaccine, social distancing and wearing face masks. The CDC also advises everyone older than 5 years old to get vaccinated and a booster shot is recommended.
