More might have been going on in ‘The Phantom Menace’ than we think

Did you ever hear of the tragedy of Darth Plageuis? Probably. But did you ever know when the tragedy happened? We might finally have a clue.

What happened to Darth Sidious and Darth Plagueis?

A new “Star Wars” book has released details about how one of the biggest Sith lords in the “Star Wars” mythology was killed by his young apprentice, Darth Sidious, confirming major speculation from within the franchise.

The story about Plageuis and Sidious gets its origins from “Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith.” In the film, Sheev Palpatine explained to young Anakin Skywalker what happened to Darth Plageuis, a dark lord of the Sith who had tremendous power. Here’s the full speech:

“Did you ever hear the tragedy of Darth Plagueis The Wise? I thought not. It’s not a story the Jedi would tell you. It’s a Sith legend. Darth Plagueis was a Dark Lord of the Sith, so powerful and so wise he could use the Force to influence the midichlorians to create life… He had such a knowledge of the dark side that he could even keep the ones he cared about from dying. The dark side of the Force is a pathway to many abilities some consider to be unnatural. He became so powerful… the only thing he was afraid of was losing his power, which eventually, of course, he did. Unfortunately, he taught his apprentice everything he knew, then his apprentice killed him in his sleep. Ironic. He could save others from death, but not himself.”

Now, we know more about what actually happened as the actual events are explained in the new “Star Wars: Secrets of the Sith” book. The book, written from the perspective of Palpatine, details what happened between Palpatine and Plageuis.

Here’s what Palpatine explained in the book, per Inside the Magic:

“After centuries in the shadows, the Sith were poised to emerge once more. As a dark apprentice, I sensed that the Galactic Republic was in disarray. Its delegates held no interest in the common good. They would be easy targets for my influence. Serving as a senator, I manipulated their greed in my favor. With each new act of legislation, I rose through their ranks. Total control of the galaxy’s governing body drew ever closer. But ascension in the Senate would not be enough. My master, Darth Plagueis, had served his purpose. I struck him down, claiming his place as the one true master of the Sith.”

Did Palpatine kill Plagueis?

This would suggest that Palpatine killed Plagueis, which has been a long-running theory within the “Star Wars” community. Palpatine’s speech to Anakin was long believed to be a retelling of the events.

  • Now, we have confirmation of when this actually happened. The details suggest Palpatine killed Plageuis around his rise in the Senate, which was seen in “Star Wars: The Phantom Menace.”

We may learn more about Darth Plagueis and the Sith Order in the future through the new “Star Wars” series called “The Acolyte,” which will be “a mystery-thriller that will take the audience into a galaxy of shadowy secrets and emerging dark side powers in the final days of the High Republic era.”
