Former BYU Cougars star John Beck, who has worked as former Cougar and New York Jets rookie Zach Wilson’s personal quarterback coach for quite some time, has joined the Jets coaching staff.
On Tuesday, ESPN Jets beat writer Rich Cimini first reported that Beck has been brought on for the remainder of this season, and Jets head coach Robert Saleh addressed the issue later in the day.
Cimini reported that Beck was on the Jets sideline last Sunday during their 34-31 win over the Cincinnati Bengals (Wilson did not play, as he is out with a PCL strain. When he was hurt on Oct. 24, it was expected he’d be out 2-4 weeks).
Saleh said that while Wilson is hurt, it will be beneficial to have Beck on hand to help Wilson review the season to this point and also help him stay sharp with his throwing motion.
“Just another piece to add,” Saleh said.
Beck starred at BYU from 2003-2006 before an NFL career that spanned from 2007-2012 in which he played for four teams.
Since his playing days, Beck has become a well-known personal quarterbacks coach in NFL circles based out of Southern California, although he has worked closest with Wilson.
“You know, those specialists, if you want to call them, those quarterback gurus and all that, John’s fantastic,” Saleh said. “He’s got a lot of really good quarterbacks in this league, but at the same time, these guys all have a chance to talk to him.
“They have dialogue throughout the week, and just piecing it all together, thought it would be really good to have John in our building, learn the verbiage that we’re teaching along with the things that are being asked of all our quarterbacks so when he is having those conversations, on the side conversation, everyone’s speaking the same language and he can tie in what he does as a quarterback guy to his student.”
Wilson, the second pick in the 2021 NFL draft, hasn’t had the smoothest rookie season for the Jets, although he’s had some bright moments. In six games, Wilson has completed 104 of 181 passes for 1,168 yards with four touchdowns against nine interceptions, and he has been sacked 19 times.
