What happened to Brian Laundrie?

Brian Laundrie “by all accounts probably committed suicide” in the Carlton Reserve “right out there where we thought he was,” Kurt Hoffman, sheriff in Sarasota County in Florida, said Friday, according to The Sarasota Herald-Tribune.

Who is Brian Laundrie? Who is Gabby Petito?

Petito and Laundrie went on a cross-country road trip in the summer. But only Laundrie returned home to North Port, Florida, on Sept. 1, driving Petito’s white van. Petito was reported missing on Sept. 11. Her body was found on Sept. 19, near a Wyoming national park.

Laundrie, meanwhile, was reported missing on Sept. 17. He was believed to have left his home on Sept. 13. His body wasn’t found until Oct. 20 in the Carlton Reserve, a 25,000-acre nature park in Florida. The Carlton Reserve had been the focus of a police investigation into Laundrie’s whereabouts.

The police officials said that Laundrie likely died sometime before they arrived at the Carlton Reserve.

• “That guy went out there and by all accounts probably committed suicide and he was right out there where we thought he was,” Hoffmann said, per The Sarasota Herald-Tribune. “There was four feet of water out there at the time.”

Now, eyes have turned to Brian Laundrie’s notebook, which was discovered at the Carlton Reserve. There were questions about the notebook and what might be inside it, as I wrote for the Deseret News.

Experts said the notebook may offer a clue about what happened to Laundrie.

• “If he killed himself, it’s much more likely that he wrote something in the notebook about Gabby. That’s what people who kill themselves often do, they open up about everything so their family and friends know what they had been dealing with before their death,” Neama Rahmani, a former assistant U.S. attorney and the current president of West Coast Trial Lawyers, told Newsweek.
