Utah Attorney General Sean Reyes has contracted COVID-19 despite being fully vaccinated.
Reyes was surprised to learn that he tested positive for the virus last week, according to his spokesman, Rich Piatt.
“He had been fighting a cold and had tested negative days earlier. He is following all the necessary steps to quarantine from his family and to keep the public safe. His family has all tested negative,” Piatt said in a statement.
Reyes, a Republican, has involved Utah in three separate lawsuits fighting Biden administration vaccine mandates for federal contractors, health care workers and businesses with 100 or more employees.

Earlier this month, the 5th Circuit Court of Appeals in New Orleans put an Occupational Safety and Health Administration rule requiring workers in large businesses to be vaccinated against COVID-19 or comply with face mask mandates and weekly testing on hold pending further litigation.
The order came after Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, South Carolina, Utah and several companies sued the Department of Labor and OSHA over the emergency temporary standard. The court found the states’ petition gives cause to believe there are “grave statutory and constitutional issues” with the mandate.
Lawsuits Utah and other states filed challenging vaccine mandates for federal contractors and health care professionals who work with Medicare and Medicaid are pending in federal courts in Georgia and Louisiana, respectively.
