Who is Maya Lopez’s uncle?

This article contains spoilers for “Hawkeye” Episode 3 — “Echoes”

“Hawkeye” teased a new major Marvel Cinematic Universe villain in its latest episode, bringing us another wrinkle as the show nears its conclusion.

In Episode 3 — titled “Echoes” — we meet Maya Lopez (Alaqua Cox), a deaf superhero who goes by the name of Echo in the comics. We briefly see her origin story, learning how she became such a major player in a crime organization.

During the flashback, we learn that young Lopez (Darnell Besaw) grew up with her uncle, William Lopez (Zahn McClarnon). She trained with him at a karate academy. During one scene, Maya has to meet her uncle, who brushes his hand on Maya’s cheek.

Later, we learn that the uncle is in charge of Maya’s criminal operation. When Clint Barton (Jeremy Renner) and Kate Bishop (Hailee Steinfield) escape from the group, the character Kazi (Fra Fee) warns Maya about fighting Ronin.

“I just hope Uncle won’t find out,” Kazi signs to Maya. “He wouldn’t be happy.”

We’re then given the third teaser. Later, Clint and Kate are talking about the criminal operation with Maya. Clint suggests there’s someone else in charge, someone who you don’t want to mess with.

“They started small, but grew. Or at least the guy at the top, he’ll do anything to grow the operation,” Clint said. “There’s someone above Maya, someone you don’t wanna mess with.”

So it’s clear that the uncle is in charge of the criminal operation. Three teasers in one episode is enough to confirm that we should be keeping an eye on Maya Lopez’s uncle and that his identity will be a major development in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Right now, the easiest answer would be that Maya Lopez’s uncle is Wilson Fisk, who goes by the name Kingpin in the Marvel comics. In fact, Maya operates under the names of Echo and Ronin with Fisk being her adopted father, according to ComicBook.com.

Fisk was previously played by Vincent D’Onofrio in “Marvel’s Daredevil,” the Netflix show that was not tied to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Marvel Studios now owns the rights to the project and its characters, so there’s a chance D’Onofrio could make a return to the role.

According to Decider, Maya Lopez’s uncle briefly laughs during the scene at the karate academy. And the laugh sounds like D’Onofrio.
